Barack Obama, Michael Jackson; What's Next?

E-mail Print PDF

The two biggest that events that dominated the news this year was Barack Obama's historic election and the death of  Michael Jackson, the King of Pop. Now many people wonder what will be the next big event? The World Wide Web was over capacity (using Twitter analogy) and in some occurrences even slowed down because of the amount of traffic it received during the  days following Michael Jackson's death. For Obama's inauguration and the days preceding the event,  the networks, the Internet and radio stations were dominated by Obamania. This leaves a question: What will be the next big story? The End of the World as we know it? -Posted by Postera

Was Michael Jackson Black or White?

E-mail Print PDF

That is a very intriguing question because throughout the years of his existence, many have wondered if the King of Pop was in reality white on the outside and black inside.(Please do not ask me what it means to be black or white from within, because this is one of those subjects that people can spend days debating without any positive outcome).
A PEW study has revealed on Monday that African Americans are more interested in the coverage of Michael Jackson's death than white Americans. Is it because they always considered him as one of them?
As an African who grew up listening to Michael Jackson and enjoying his performances, I always believed that he was neither Black nor White; he was simply Michael Jackson. A look at his kids tells you a different story while a look at his family will tell you yet another.
The change of his skin color shows that he was not comfortable in his skin so it is understandable that some refer to him as a white person. Others on the other hand think of him as the Michael of the 80s who was still black.
In reality, Jackson was neither black nor white.

Facebook, Twitter NOT Over Capacity in Africa

E-mail Print PDF

There are not many Facebook or Twitter users in African countries in general. The majority of African based twitters are from South Africa followed by Egypt. Twitter is a micro-blogging free social networking that enables its users to send messages or tweets to others. Twitter is very popular in developed countries and it has helped in breaking news from many celebrities. In many African countries, internet use is very expensive and instead of spending the money on Tweeting and sending updates or on Facebook, many would rather buy food for themselves or their families. In countries like the Democratic Republic of Congo, the Republic of Congo and Senegal, the official language is French and the Twitter interface is mainly in English, though a person can tweet in any prefered language. Most of the top Twitter users from Africa are based in the Diaspora. Kaysha, the Congolese musician based in France is one of the top ten followed African Twitter user with more than 1,500 followers.

The African National Congress (ANC) has frequently updated Facebook and Twitter accounts used to inform their followers. Salif Keita(@SalifKeita), Djimon Hounsou (@DjimonHounsou) are among  new Twitter African users. Ashton Kutcher beat CNN last night in being the first user who reached a million followers.
